I’m going to be studying in Hamburg. How can I apply for a room?

You can apply 3 months prior to the desired move-in date/course start date. For more information, see: How to secure a spot at a student residence.

You can apply up to 3 months prior to the desired move-in date. For more information, see: How to secure a spot at a student residence.

Admission request

Can I sent the admission request by post?

Only in exceptional cases (hardship: students with chronic illnesses and/or disabilities). Everyone else must apply online. The admission request can be completed and sent off directly.

How long do I have to wait for a spot at a student residence?

Please contact the student residence officers if you have any questions about waiting times.

I have applied at all the residences. How long do I have to wait?

Please contact the Residence info centre, which can provide you with information on waiting times.

Deposit

Do I have to pay a deposit?

Yes, the bond amount is staggered as follows:

Monthly rent of up to € 300 = € 300 deposit

Monthly rent of up to € 400 = € 400 deposit

Monthly rent of up to € 600 = € 600 deposit

Monthly rent of € 601 and over = € 800 deposit

Guests do not pay a deposit, but are instead charged a key deposit of € 50, and, if necessary, a flat rate final cleaning charge of € 25.

Can I also rent a room as a school student or gap-year student?

Unfortunately not.

Termination

I wish to terminate my lease, what should I do?

We need the written termination with your original signature by no later than 6 weeks prior to the end of the month in which you wish to move out

What do I need to remember in terms of the television and radio charge?

Cable TV and Internet connections are provided free of charge; the German TV licensing fee (Rundfunkbeitrag), however, is not included and must therefore be paid by you. The Studierendenwerk Hamburg AöR (institution under public law) is not able or allowed to pay this licensing fee for you, as it is a private-law matter. Further information can also be found here
