Current information: Federal government announces financial aid for students

  • Study Loan from the KfW (Studienkredit der KfW)
You can find detailed information here. Please note: This loan is not interest-free; it is rather a KfW loan for which no interest has to be paid in the period until the end of March 2021, after which the regular KfW interest rates apply again.

  • The Federal Ministry of Education and Research has announced that it intends to make € 100 million available to the Studierendenwerke in order to be able to pay grants to students in a corona-related financial emergency. How this will actually be done is still open and is currently being clarified in the Federal Ministry. So far, the prerequisites for this are as unclear as the technical implementation. The Studierendenwerke are trying to clarify the situation. Applications can therefore not yet be made.

In order to help here and now in current need, the Hamburg Corona Emergency Loan is available in Hamburg. With this loan, students receive financial aid quickly according to the conditions described above:

What you should know now

The Hamburg Corona Emergency Loan for Students offers a quickly available option for interim financing for demonstrably needy students who are unable to take advantage of the existing assistance and funding opportunities of the federal government and the city, or who are unable to do so to a sufficient extent. These include BAföG, the federal regulations on housing rent (click here for the law (document in German), here for important questions of tenant protection (document in German)) and basic security (unemployment benefit II). Furthermore, students can check with their health insurance company to see if it is possible to defer their contributions. Students who can prove that they are in financial distress due to the Corona situation as a result of losing their part-time job or other sources of income described in the guidelines (e.g. loss of their self-employment or the loss of parental maintenance payments) and who have not applied for and/or received any other emergency assistance, can apply for the Corona emergency loan.

All important information about the loan and the application process can be found below. It is possible to apply for the loan of 400 € each for the months May and June 2020. If all requirements are met, the amount to be disbursed will be on your account shortly after application acceptance. The loan will be repaid in accordance with the regulations of the selected application and will begin at the earliest 12 months after application in 8 monthly instalments of 50 € each (all details in guideline 'Richtlininen (E)' [Service: legally non-binding translation in English]).

  • Applications are open to German and international students from state and state-recognized private universities in Hamburg (see the list of universities in the guideline 'Richtlininen (E)' [Service: legally non-binding translation in English]. Assistance from the fund can be granted as an interest-free loan of € 400 for the month applied for and can be applied for a maximum of the months April to June 2020.

In the month of May 2020, the Hamburg Corona Emergency Loan can be applied for only for the current month (i.e. May 2020):

    • Students who have not yet submitted an application or whose application for the month of April has been rejected, please select the form "May 2020 - First application" for the application.

    • Students whose application for the month of April 2020 has been approved, please use the form "May 2020 - follow-up application for April 2020".

  • Currently, only the application for the month of May 2020 can be submitted and processed. If you (additionally) require a loan for the month of June 2020, please submit this application from the beginning of June 2020. You will find the relevant forms on this website in good time.
