Your housing in Hamburg – Accommodation for international students at our halls of residence

Accommodation for international students is generally reserved at the residences run by the Studierendenwerk Hamburg.

You can fill out an admission application online.

Many students only staying in Hamburg for a short time as part of an exchange programme, e.g. “Sokrates”, are given a place directly. The Studierendenwerk Hamburg from the respective university provides a set allocation for this.

Service Package – a guaranteed accommodation right from the start

Make the commencement of your studies in Hamburg easier and organize your accommodation in Hamburg already from your home country: All you need to do is to book our Service Package, thus benefitting from transparent cost and a focus on your studies (rather than on the search of accommodation) right from the start. Studierendenwerk Hamburg has provided accommodation for international students for more than 40 years and offers special Service Packages since 2006.

What does the Service Package include?

  • A guaranteed accommodation at the beginning of the winter Semester (beginning 1st September or 1st October)
  • A furnished single room in one of our student residences
  • Support from our Student Welcome-Tutors

What are the conditions?

  • You are an international student/freemover
  • You want to organize your international studies in Hamburg already from your home country
  • You pay the security deposit as well as three monthly rents in advance
  • The minimum rental period is 6 month – the contract cannot be terminated prior to this period
  • A certificate of enrolment of a university in Hamburg must be submitted upon moving in

The number of Service Packages is limited and they will be issued based on the order of the bookings.

We are afraid we have to inform you we will not offer our Service Packages in winter semester 2019/2020. Thank you for your understanding. Information on our Service Packages for the winter semester 2020/2021 are expected to be published here in mid-July 2020.

Illustrated residence dictionary

How do you explain German waste separation to Chinese students, and what is washing machine or stove in Polish?

The Deutsches Studentenwerk, DSW, has compiled an illustrated residence dictionary to answer these questions, showing life at the residences to foreign students using pictures and words: caretaker to Internet to party, everyday situations are translated into various languages.

Illustrated Mensa dictionary

More than yummy! The „Illustrated Mensa Dictionary“ joins three students on an every-day tour of dining services. In Germany, the word “Mensa” (from Latin: table) refers to the large student restaurants that are operated by the Studentenwerke (STW), Germany’s public student services providers. The brochure presents typical food and drinks, the e-payment system “MensaCard”, as well as recipes, ingredients and regional differences on offer in the Mensa – and all this in a graphically illustrated, trilingual version (German, English, and Chinese). The dictionary aims to help international students find their way through the Mensa, and promotes the diversity and quality of dining services in Germany.

Illustrated health dictionary

From A to Z, the health dictionary provides general information in German and English for international students. Topics covered include health insurance, doctor’s appointments and medical certificates. Medical matters and necessary vocabulary, such as patient information leaflets, referrals and vaccination cards, are explained in dialogues, short texts and campus scenes.

Making the early days in Hamburg easier for international students
