He told the scholarship holders in an exciting and entertaining way about his life as an immigrant in Hamburg and how he literally managed to work his way up from rags to riches.

The evening also focused on the topic of Christmas and many of the scholarship holders reported on the significance of this celebration in their home country and how they perceive and spend this time in Germany.

"I was personally able to see for myself that the Studierendenwerk supports extremely competent and exciting students with a refugee or migration background with the Hamburg Stipendium. In times of a shortage of skilled workers, I can only encourage the companies in our city to support the Hamburg Stipendium and get to know these young people themselves."

- Ian Karan, entrepreneur and former Senator for Economic Affairs
